Proverbs 26
Stubborn Fools
Read Proverbs Chapter 26
Key Verse | Proverbs 26:11
11 As a dog returns to its vomit,
so fools repeat their folly.
Reflection
There are several Hebrew words that are translated “fool” and each of them carries a slightly different shade of meaning. The word that is used in Proverbs 26 could be translated as “stubborn fool.” This word is not describing someone who lacks intelligence, but rather someone who rejects wisdom and is resistant to correction.

The fool hears correction but resists it, sees consequences but ignores them, speaks carelessly, and stirs up strife. Stubborn fools aren’t dumb, but they have closed their hearts to wisdom.

Proverbs 26 warns us not to be stubborn fools. It also instructs the wise on how to respond. Verses 4-5 seem contradictory. We’re told both not to respond, and to respond, to fools. What this means is that the wise must be discerning. Sometimes it is better not to respond to foolishness, and sometimes we must respond.

The overall lesson? Don’t be a fool!

Be Thou My Vision by Nathan Pacheco
Self-Examine
1. Am I teachable? Do I resist correction? Do I insist on my own opinion always being right?

2. Am I quick to respond to those I believe are foolish? Do I pray before I speak?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for my foolish ways. Forgive me those times I have resisted your correction and the correction of those with more wisdom than me. Soften my heart to your will and to your way. Give me wisdom in dealing with others. Help me to be as gentle as a dove and as wise as a serpent. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!
