Proverbs 25
The Wisdom of Humility
Read Proverbs Chapter 25
Key Verse | Proverbs 25:6-7
6 Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence,
and do not claim a place among his great men;
7 it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,”
than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.
Reflection
Proverbs 25 teaches the quiet wisdom of humility. It warns against self-promotion and the subtle desire to secure honor for ourselves. To grasp for status is to risk public humiliation; to wait in humility is to leave room for exaltation.

Jesus echoes these words in Luke 14:7-11, where he tells guests not to take the place of honor at a banquet, but the lowest seat. His conclusion reflects Proverbs almost exactly: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus does not merely repeat the wisdom tradition – he deepens it. Humility is not just socially prudent; it reflects the very character of the kingdom of God.

The issue is the posture of the heart. Pride seeks recognition; humility trusts God with recognition. The humble person doesn’t deny their gifts but refuses to grasp for prominence. So serve God and let honor come – if it comes at all – from the right source.
A Song to Worship With
Humble Heart by Matt McChlery
Self-Examine
1. Am I content if I do not get attention or accolades for the things that I do? Do I crave honor?

2. Am I willing to use my gifts for God without seeking prominence? Will I receive honor, but not seek for it?
Prayer
Father, guard my heart from the quiet pull of pride and the desire to exalt myself. Forgive me for the times I have sought recognition more than faithfulness, position more than service. Teach me the way of humility. Help me to take the lower seat without resentment, to serve other without need applause, and to trust you with whatever honor comes. Shape in me the mind of Christ, who humbled himself even to the point of death on the cross. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!
