12 There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.
Reflection
Have you ever been convinced you were right – only to find out you were wrong? Human perception is limited. We are capable of deep sincerity – and deep self-deception at the same time. Something can feel justified, logical, and even morally convincing… and still be wrong. Proverbs 14:12 is not about rebellion, but misplaced confidence. The phrase “appears to be right” is the key. Wisdom warns us: appearance is not the same as truth, and immediate appeal is not the same as lasting good.
In the broader context of Proverbs 14, the solution is not cynicism, but humility. If our instincts are not always right, then we must submit our reasoning to something higher. Verse 26 says, “whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress.” Verse 27 says, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life.”
These verses invite self-examination. We aren’t always right, but God is. When we submit to God’s revealed wisdom we are relying on him to help us form what is right and true.

Self-Examine
1. Where might I be assuming I’m right without seeking God’s counsel?
2. Where am I trusting my feelings more than God’s Word?
Prayer
Jesus you are the way, the truth, and the life. Help me to trust your way, to live in your truth, and to find strength in your resurrection life. When I am confident in my own understanding, slow me down. Guard me from the paths that only seem right, but are not. Give me humility to seek your wisdom above my instincts. Lead my steps in your truth, and keep me on the road that leads to life. I pray in your name. Amen!
