1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but whoever hates correction is stupid.
Reflection
Think back to a time when you were young and you were disciplined by your parents. You may not have liked it at the time, but that discipline likely helped shape you into the person you are today. We tend to think of discipline as punishment, but discipline in the Biblical sense is teaching and correction. Hebrews 12 says God disciplines those he loves. In Hebrews 12:10-11 the writer says, “he disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but it later yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” God’s discipline is driven by his love and is always for our good.
To love discipline is to love to learn and grow. The word “disciple” comes from the word “discipline.” A disciple is a learner. As followers of Jesus we are learning from the Master Teacher. Correction can be painful when it challenges our preconceived ideas and opinions, but it is always worth it.
And remember, whoever hates correction is stupid. Don’t be stupid!

Self-Examine
1. What areas of your life is God correcting you (maybe you are experiencing conviction), but you have been resistant to change?
2. As you read through Proverbs 12 what verses jumped out to you?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that correction is not always easy. Stretch my faith and help me to love discipline even when it is hard. Correct me where I am wrong and help me every day to become more like you. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen!
