Proverbs 3
Trust and Guidance
Read Proverbs Chapter 3
Key Verses | Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Reflection
Have you ever been convinced that something was true only to find out later that you were wrong?  Maybe you heard that if you drop a penny from the Empire State Building it will kill someone, or that shaving makes hair grow back thicker.  As school kids we might have heard that Columbus sailed to America to prove that the earth is round.  None of those things are true.  A penny will likely flutter harmlessly to the ground.  Shaving does not make your hair grow back thicker.  And Columbus was trying to find a shorter route to India.  Solomon warns us about the danger of leaning on our own understanding.  Instead, we are to trust God with all our heart.  We might be wrong, because our understanding is limited, but God is never wrong.  Solomon says the wisdom we learn from God is like finding a great treasure (verses 13-15).  Nothing we could ever desire compares to it.

Self-Examine
What is something your believed to be true but later found out was not?
Make a list of Solomon’s commands, and the promises that come with keeping them found in Proverbs 3. We’ll give an example below:
The command: “Honor the Lord with your wealth…”
The promise: “Your barns will be filled to overflowing…”
Prayer
Lord, you are the Wise One. Your way is better than my way. Help me to trust in you with all my heart. Help me to submit to you in all that I do. Help me to understand that wisdom does not consist only in the right things that I do, but in my surrender to your will and way for my life. Thank you Jesus for your gift of grace! I believe you are the way, the truth, and the life. Today I trust in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
